A man died on a movie set Thursday afternoon when a wall collapsed, burying the victim underneath a pile of debris.

Emergency crews rushed to 75 Commissioners Street to retrieve the man from under the rubble. But the victim, identified as David Ritchie, 56, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Two other people were injured in the incident, which occurred just after 2 p.m. One reportedly suffered serious neck and back injuries.

Ritchie was a set dresser in the city's film production industry. He was working on a film at the time of the incident.

Fellow film hands tried to help Ritchie using a first aid kit. But there was little his colleagues could do.

The structure collapsed when a backhoe struck the wall, sending thousands of pounds of concrete tumbling down. It was being torn down after shooting at the area had wrapped-up.

The wall was part of a Hollywood movie set at a film studio in Toronto's port lands area. In production is a new sci-fi thriller titled 'Jumper,' starring Samuel L. Jackson.

The movie star was not at the location when the accident occurred. The film is due for release next year.

Police and firefighters were on the scene Thursday afternoon. Police determined it was a workplace accident.

The Ministry of Labour has assigned investigators to probe the incident.

Ritchie's death marks the fourth fatal industrial accident in the Greater Toronto Area for January.

On Jan. 17, a man fell from the roof 14 storeys from a roof near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue.

A week before, a man was struck in the head by falling scaffolding at a construction site. High winds had blown his hard hat off just before the accident.

One day before that accident, a man was crushed by a tractor trailer as he was working on the vehicle's brakes.
