A Mississauga mother has been charged in connection to the death of her child.

Police said Niyati Jha was three years old when she died, after her parents brought her to a Mississauga medical clinic, hurt and unconscious on Sept. 20, 2011.

Niyati was taken from the medical clinic to Sick Kids hospital in Toronto. She died of her injuries a day later.

Police said they suspect the little girl was murdered.

"We've since determined that the injuries were to the head and to the brain and were inconsistent with any other explanation," said Peel police Insp. George Koekkoek.

A coroner's report and help from investigators at Sick Kids hospital helped police lay charges in the case.

Sources told CTV Toronto's Tamara Cherry that a teacher reported suspected abuse to the Children's Aid Society at an earlier date, but Niyati was not removed from her home.

Nandini Jha, 35, was arrested Monday morning and charged with second-degree murder.

She will make her first court appearance Tuesday.

Sources said Niyati's parents moved to Canada from India in late 2010.

Niyati was one of two children in the family, the younger of two girls.
