The executive director of a Milton daycare where an employee is accused of possessing child pornography says she is “shocked” to learn of the charges.
A man, who was previously employed at the Milton Community Resource Centre, was arrested and charged with one count of possessing child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography.
He appeared in a Brampton court earlier this week for a bail hearing.
Parents at the Milton Community Resource Centre received an email notifying them of the police investigation on Tuesday.
Rebecca Barrows-Vrankulj, the executive director of the daycare, said the news was “deeply troubling” to the centre and that they are cooperating with police in their investigation.
“All of our staff are taken through police screenings before they are hired,” said Barrows-Vrankulj. “They do a police reference check. They do a vulnerable sector screening as well. So we are shocked to learn than one of our staff was facing this kind of charge.”
Ontario Provincial Police have taken over the case and are expected to provide more details about their investigation at a news conference tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The multi-jurisdictional investigation involves the Toronto Police, Halton Regional Police and Peel Regional Police.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Halton Regional Police and the Children's Aid Society said they are also trying to determine if any criminal acts occurred at the daycare throughout the alleged suspect's employment.
In the meantime, daycare officials say they are communicating with parents and police about the case.
“We’ve been giving parents statements from the very beginning, letting them know we are working with police,” Barrows-Vrankulj said.
“What’s really important to us is that everyone understands that security and the safety of children is paramount and so we are collaborating with the police and providing information to them as they require it.”
Parents with children who attend the daycare told CTV Toronto they're just as shocked by the investigation.
"He was great with the kids. My child really liked him," said one parent. "That's really hard to stomach."
A suspect in the case was identified by police as 37-year-old Steven Campbell.
Campbell has been released on a $5,000 bail and is expected to make a court appearance next month.
