GO Transit has proposed a fare hike of approximately 5 per cent for those who buy paper tickets instead of buying passes, which would start on Feb. 1.
The proposal, which will be discussed at a Metrolinx board of directors meeting on Thursday, suggests a tiered fare increase approach to meet the needs of a growing customer base.
GO Transit President Greg Percy suggested in the proposal that the fare increase be based on distance travelled by the user.
For example, a rider travelling approximately three kilometres from Union Station to Exhibition Station would only see a fare hike of 10 cents. A rider travelling approximately 40 kilometres from Union Station to Mississauga's Meadowvale Station would pay an extra 40 cents.
Single fares for adults would be increased as follows:
- 10 cent increase on the minimum fare of $5.20
- 30 cent increase on fares between $5.21 and $6.50
- 40 cent increase on fares between $6.51 and $8.25
- 50 cent increase on fares greater than $8.25
Discounts offered to students and seniors would remain unchanged. Discounts offered to those who use Presto passes, refillable fare cards that work on several transit systems across Ontario, would also remain unchanged.
According to the proposal, the extra money would go toward extra trains during peak hours, express bus trips and new infrastructure.
