Former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty is eligible to receive a severance payout of approximately $312,687.75, CTV Toronto has learned.
McGuinty spent more than two decades as an MPP, but it will be the time he served as Ontario premier that will boost his payout.
Sources told CTV Toronto that McGuinty is no different than any other MPP and is not receiving any special treatment when it comes to the calculation, which will be based on the best 36 consecutive months of base pay.
This averages out to around $208,000, or the approximate he received while serving as premier. Because McGuinty has served more than eight years as an MPP, he is entitled to a severance of 18 months’ worth of salary, which is based on the 36-month average.
Though McGuinty had stepped down as premier last October, he didn’t give up his position as the MPP for Ottawa South until Wednesday – a seat he held for 23 years.
Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak said little has changed since McGuinty was replaced by Premier Kathleen Wynne in February.
“I’ve had my comments about Dalton McGuinty. He basically walked off the job six months ago. My concern is with the current government and I just see more of the same,” Hudak said.
