A 57-year-old Markham man is dead, struck by a car after he walked against the lights.

The incident occurred Friday night at the intersection of McCowan Road and Major MacKenzie Drive.

"The pedestrian was crossing Major MacKenzie from the north side to the south side on the east side of the intersection, and unfortunately he was crossing against the walk signal," Const. Paul Diceman of York Regional Police told reporters.

"An eastbound vehicle going through on the green light unfortunately struck this gentleman.'

Paramedics took the victim to Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto, but he couldn't be saved, Diceman said.

Charges aren't expected to be laid in this incident. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
