AJAX, Ont. -- Ontario's police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a man was shot by an officer in Ajax, east of Toronto.

Durham regional police say a man in his late 40s was rushed to hospital on Monday after officers confronted him on the street and he was shot.

The man, who was not immediately identified, suffered serious injuries.

Police say the incident happened after officers responded to a disturbance call at about 10 a.m. in north Ajax (near Westney Road North and Williamson Drive West.)

No officers were injured.

The Special Investigations Unit was called in, as is the case whenever police are involved in an incident where there has been serious injury or death.
