A man is in hospital in critical condition after an assault in the city’s downtown core early Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at around 12:35 a.m. near Queen and Bathurst streets.
According to police, a man was involved in a fight on the street with two other men when he was knocked to the ground. The man suffered a serious injury, police say, and was unable to get up.
When officers arrived, they found the victim bleeding heavily. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment and his condition has since worsened.
Police say his injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
“His situation is fairly severe,” Const. David Hopkinson told CP24 at police headquarters Tuesday morning.
Investigators have not yet released suspect descriptions but say the perpetrators appear to have fled the area in a light blue car.
Hopkinson said he could not confirm reports that suggest the incident was a random attack.
“We had reports from people on the scene that it was a random attack.. I think it is a little early in the investigation to determine what might have been a motive,” he added. “We are going to wait for the investigators to update us and I’ll hopefully be able to offer more later.”
He urged anyone with information to come forward and speak to police.
“We are talking 12:35 a.m. right after the New Year rang in at Queen and Bathurst. There would be hundreds, thousands of people, revelers in the area. We are hoping that someone saw something, maybe the car, a distinctive light blue car,” Hopkinson said.
“Maybe somebody has a picture or cell phone video or can offer us any information.”
The age of the victim has not yet been released.
