Toronto police have charged a 29-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the male victim and his attacker got into an argument on the sidewalk on Wallace Avenue, near Bloor Street and Lansdowne Avenue, at about 4:30 p.m.

Witnesses said the victim was stabbed 10 to 15 times in the head and chest with what police described as a 15-centimetre hunting knife. The man underwent emergency surgery at Sunnybrook hospital but died from his injuries.

The identify of the victim won't be released until his next of kin has been notified. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Some motorists who saw the horrific attack said a man flee the scene on foot.

On Friday, police announced Shahin Pirouzi of Toronto was charged with second-degree murder. He was to appear at the Old City Hall courts later in the day.

The death is the city's 14th homicide of the year.
