A 21-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the disappearance and presumed death of a Markham woman.
Ying Chun (Annie) Li was last seen by her family near Denison Street and Markham Road at around 6 p.m. on June 12.
Investigators said the last known sighting of Li was in the Richmond Hill area about an hour later.
Li’s brother, Jet Hu, told CP24 in July that his sister had texted his parents that night indicating she was going out for dinner with a friend. He said she texted her father again at 11 p.m. to say she would be home the next morning but never returned.
By July 6, York Regional Police deemed her disappearance suspicious. The homicide unit took over the investigation soon after as a result of “new information” in the case.
In a news release Thursday, investigators said they believe that Li is dead.
Police issued an arrest warrant for Jiarui (Jerry) Tang on Aug. 2 in relation to Li’s disappearance.
On Thursday, Tang was located by police at a residence on Alicewood Drive in Markham and taken in custody.
"This morning our investigators closed in on him at a residence on Alicewood Drive in Markham. He was placed under arrest without incident," York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden told CTV Toronto.
Tang has been charged with one count of manslaughter.
He appeared in a Newmarket court this afternoon where he was denied bail.
"The arrest has been made but we're still looking for any information that people might have," Pattenden added.
