Torontonians are being asked to sport a red ribbon in support of a longstanding campaign to promote driving sober.
The group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is making the ribbons available for the 25th edition of its Red Ribbon campaign, which runs from Nov. 1 until Jan. 7, 2013.
It's important to drive the message home now, the group says, because "impaired driving is of heightened concern due to holiday parties and events."
To raise awareness MADD and its campaign partners -- the Toronto Police Service, Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Emergency Medical Services, the Ontario Government and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada -- are asking drivers to fix the ribbons to their vehicles.
Pedestrians and cyclists are invited to show their support too, by fixing the ribbon to a backpack, purse, briefcase or even a keychain.
"This symbolizes a commitment to driving sober during the holiday season and throughout the year," the group said in a statement announcing the launch of the campaign in Toronto Tuesday morning.
Red ribbons are already available at MADD's Toronto office, located at 35 Lytton Blvd., near Glencairn Avenue and Yonge Street, as well as at local Allstate Insurance Company offices.
Commuters will have a chance to grab one when from volunteers at TTC subway stations from Nov. 12 to 16. And, as of Dec. 1, the ribbons will be distributed through LCBO stores as well.
