In light of recent incidents, Halton police issued the following instructions to safeguard against becoming a victim of a false charity scam:
- Be wary of appeals that "tug at your heart strings," especially when they involve current events
- Call the charity directly and find out if organizers are aware of the method of collection
- Check the charity's financial information online and confirm its registration information through Canada Revenue Agency (1-800-267-2384)
- Ask the solicitor for the registered charitable tax number of the charity and question any discrepancies
- Refuse any high pressure appeals. "Legitimate fundraisers won't push you to give on the spot," the statement said.
