The day before the official arrival of spring, parts of southern and central Ontario are being hit with yet another blast of wintry weather.

Officials are warning drivers to take care, in the event of the freezing rain and ice pellets predicted across southern Ontario on Wednesday.

In most areas across southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe, precipitation is expected to fall as rain, but Environment Canada warns it may begin as freezing rain.

"Travellers are advised to exercise extreme caution once the precipitation arrives, as untreated roads and walkways could become quite icy," Environment Canada said in a statement.

The freezing rain warning applies to:

  • Parry Sound-Muksoka
  • Burk's Falls-Bayfield Inlet

The freezing rain warning has ended for the following areas:

  • Caledon
  • Newmarket-Georgina-York Region
  • Uxbridge-Beaverton-North Durham Region
  • Mount Forest-Arthur-Northern Wellington County
  • Dufferin-Innisfil
  • Hanover-Dundalk-Grey County
  • Owen Sound-Blue Mountains
  • Barrie-Collingwood-Hillsdale
  • Lindsay-Southern Kawartha Lakes
  • Bruce Peninsula-Sauble Beach-Tobermory
  • Midland-Coldwater- Orr Lake
  • Orillia-Lagoon City-Washago
  • Fenelon Falls-Balsam Lake Park-Northern Kawartha Lakes

Further north, precipitation in central Ontario was expected to begin as snow and transition into rain by the afternoon. Five to 10 centimetres of snowfall are expected.

In eastern Ontario, snowfall was expected to begin late in the morning, changing to rain in the evening. Freezing rain will be less of a risk and up to 10 centimetres of snow is possible, the weather agency said.

Areas east of Lake Huron will see snow Wednesday night, and brisk winds may produce blowing snow and low visibility.
