A number of flights out of Pearson International Airport in Toronto have been delayed or cancelled ahead of a major storm that is expected to bear down on parts of the U.S. starting Friday night.

Pearson said in a tweet Friday morning that some flights to the U.S. have been cancelled “due to weather.”

As of 8 p.m. on Friday, 30 arrivals and 30 departures had been cancelled at the airport.

The airport is encouraging Canadian travellers to check flight information with the airlines.

Air Canada has also issued a travel alert for the U.S. northeast, listing affected airports and possible flight disruptions to Air Canada flights and Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz.

More than 75 million people in the United States are preparing for a massive – and possible record-breaking -- winter storm.

Heavy snow is forecasted across at least 15 states, with up to 75 centimetres of the white stuff expected in some regions.
