A father was killed Sunday afternoon as he tried to rescue his two children from a burning home in west-end Toronto.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a home on Kemp Square, located in the Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue area, just before 3 p.m.

The 35-year-old man, who neighbours identified as Ken, ran out of the home with his infant girl in his arms. After handing her over to a neighbour, he rushed back inside to rescue his 12-year-old daughter Britney.

Both the man and the girl were found on the second floor of the home without vital signs, according to Toronto Fire Services District Chief Stephan Powell.

The victims were rushed to Humber River Regional Hospital where the man succumbed to his injuries.

His daughter was later rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children where she continues to fight for her life.

The baby was treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.

The children's mother was out of the home running errands when the fire broke out, Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Richard McKeown told ctvtoronto.ca.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the blaze.

The home was not equipped with a water sprinkler.
