CORNWALL, Ont. -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Cornwall police officer involved in a search in which a man was seriously hurt.
The police watchdog says the officer threw a distraction device in a home where officers were looking for unregistered firearms.
The device detonated with a large flash and loud bang near a resident of the home, sending him to hospital.
This injured man was not, however, the subject of the search warrant.
The SIU states the officer did not commit a criminal offence during the incident and that the police had the authority to be there and the injuries were likely the result of an accident.
