One man is dead after falling 20 feet from a scaffolding inside an east-end grocery store.

The 45-year-old man was a contractor doing work on the interior roof of Highland Farms, at 850 Ellesmere Court, at around 10:30 Sunday night.

Police say the man lost his balance while on the scaffolding and fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete floor.

The man was wearing a safety helmet but it fell off his head during his fall.

He was rushed to Scarborough General Hospital with serious head injuries but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the accident. There is no word on whether any charges will be laid.
