Traffic was diverted in two places for hours due to flooding caused by broken pipes in Toronto's east end.

The broken pipes are located under Sheppard Avenue just east of McCowan Road, and Leslie Street north of Finch Avenue. Police said the large water mains broke some time before 3 a.m.

As crews worked to repair the pipes, police were at both scenes diverting traffic around the areas until the flow of water could be stopped stopped.

Few details are known, but the City of Toronto's Traffic Management Centre said that a sinkhole may be forming on Leslie, caused by the rush of water. Northbound lanes of Leslie are closed between Castlebury Crescent and Old Cummer Avenue.

Westbound traffic was being squeezed into one lane between Shorting and McCowan Roads on Sheppard, but all lanes have since reopened.
