A 17-month-old girl is dead and her mother is in critical condition in a Hamilton hospital after the two were involved in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 7/8 in Kitchener Saturday evening.
Police said they received a call about a disabled westbound vehicle on the highway around 6:30 p.m. Moments later they received another call saying a cube van had collided with the disabled vehicle which had been carrying the child and her parents.
Ornge air ambulance said the child was airlifted to hospital. OPP later confirmed the girl had died of her injuries in hospital.
The child’s mother was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital by land ambulance where she remains in critical condition. The child’s father was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
Police arrested the driver of the cube van at the scene on suspicion of impaired driving, but have not laid any charges so far.
Highway 7/8 was shut down at Fischer Hallman Road following the collision. Police said they expected the highway to remain closed for several hours.
