Two Toronto-area school trustees have been removed from office after failing to file campaign finances last week.

Peel District School Board trustee Harkirat Singh (Wards 9 and 10) and Toronto District School Board trustee David Smith (Ward 19) have both been ousted because they missed the March 27 deadline.

Smith and Singh were forced to give up the seats they won in October because they failed to file their expense reports by the 2 p.m. deadline outlined in the Municipal Elections Act.

The act requires all candidates to file their campaign expenses five months from election day. Candidates can request an extension if needed.

As a result of the trustees' failure to meet the deadline, both offices have been forfeited and are now considered to be vacant. Both trustees have been removed from the school board websites.

Based on the elections act, boards now have 90 days to appoint new trustees or ask the cities to hold a by-election.
