A 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead on scene and a 22-year-old woman who was herself seriously hurt faces charges following a single-vehicle crash in Markham early Friday morning.
According to police, a white Land Rover was travelling eastbound on 14th Avenue near Markham Road at around 3:10 a.m. when it failed to negotiate a turn, struck a median and rolled over multiple times.
The deceased victim was ejected from the vehicle during the crash while the other two victims had to be extricated by emergency workers and were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious injuries.
The accident happened while there was heavy fog in the area, though police say it is too early to determine whether that may have been a factor.
In a news release issued Friday afternoon, York Regional Police said a driver identified as 22-year-old Jing Jing Pan was arrested and charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.
Police say that the Major Collision Bureau will be conducting a full investigation.
Police closed 14th Avenue west of Markham Road for some time as a result.
Residents in the area told CTV News Toronto that speed has been an issue on this particular area of 14th Avenue.
"You can see people going really fast over here (as they) take the curve," Jeff Hilaire, a nearby resident, told CTV News Toronto. "There's a stop sign here, so (they come to) the stop sign at approximately 40 or 45. You can tell that people go pretty fast there."
