Police have identified a man who died around midnight Saturday after a double-shooting in a Scarborough pizza shop.
Abdul Monir, 31, was gunned down after midnight as he finished his shift at Halal Pizza Time near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue, where he had begun working a few weeks ago. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rahim Dorani, the shop’s owner, was also shot and underwent surgery Sunday. “He’s doing better right now,” said his son, Hekmat Dorani.
Monir left behind a wife and two young children in Afghanistan. Hekmat described him as, “a really honest, hardworking man.”
Det.-Sgt. Graham Gibson told reporters Sunday that a man was seen entering the passenger side of an older-model light-coloured four-door Toyota or Honda after the shooting. The car then travelled southbound away from the scene. Some witnesses have reported that the headlights were out.
That suspect is described as black, likely in his 30s, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a light-blue windbreaker and a black baseball cap.
A second suspect was seen driving the vehicle.
Gibson said that police have not yet spoken with the surviving victim, and that a failed robbery is “always a possibility.”
Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or who may have video footage or photos, contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
