Toronto police are urging witnesses to come forward following a fatal shooting inside an apartment building in the city’s west end Wednesday night.

The incident unfolded at around 10:30 p.m. on the seventh floor of a building located near Jane Street and Yewtree Boulevard, in the city’s Jane and Finch neighbourhood.

Toronto Police Det. Shawn Mahoney said officers were called to the scene for reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found a man without vital signs.

The victim, who has been identified as 35-year-old Dameion McFarlane, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said investigators are looking for multiple suspects.

“What I can tell you at this point is that we are working on determining how many suspects were involved. At this initial stage of our investigation, we know there are possibly three male parties involved that fled the scene on foot,” Mahoney said.

Investigators believe there was a number of people in the vicinity at the time of the shooting and are asking anyone with information or surveillance camera footage to contact them.

“We do know from the participation of the witnesses that we had last night that there were a number of people in the lobby area, the elevators and various floor and we’d like to speak to those about what they saw,” he said.

“I’m going to be asking members of the public that live in this general area if they can check their surveillance equipment for anybody that may have been running around in the area at approximately 10:30 last night. Or look to see if there were any suspicious vehicles.”

The building was under a brief lockdown following the shooting Wednesday night as police tended to the scene.
