A residential street in North York was closed to traffic after a watermain break caused flooding on the roadway and resulted in the opening of a sinkhole Wednesday morning.
Toronto Fire says that city crews were working on replacing a pipe on Milady Road, near Finch and Islington avenues, when the flooding first occurred at around 3 a.m.
The water bubbled up to the surface and rose as high as the axles on the cars.
Water to the area was then shut off about two hours later.
About half a dozen basements were flooded. City contractors have been working on Milady Road recently and the city says they’re investigating what went wrong.
Reports from the scene indicated that part of a front lawn on the street has collapsed into a sinkhole.
Milady Road was closed from Finch Avenue to Islington Avenue during the repairs and cleanup, but reopened later in the afternoon.
