GO Transit has added additional train service on its Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West lines for the month of April in order to accommodate the thousands of fans that are expected to head downtown to catch the Raptors and the Blue Jays in action.
With the Raptors headed for the NBA playoffs and the Blue Jays kicking off a season with heightened expectations, GO Transit is expecting to see a significant spike in commuters at Union Station on game nights.
In order to reduce crowding on the platform, the agency will add one additional eastbound train and one additional westbound train at the conclusion of each April Blue Jays game.
The additional trains will not be listed on the GO Transit schedule because their departure time will vary.
“Because we have both the Raptors and Blue Jays playing it could mean about 70, 000 fans downtown,” Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins told CP24 on Saturday. “Hopefully this will help manage the crowding at Union Station.”
In addition to adding trains, GO Transit will also have additional staff at Union Station on game days and nights.
“We really want people to take transit. Often there is drinking and excitement and it is just the safest way to get home,” she said.
