The 20-year-old male victim was shot in the torso and was found outside the By-the-Way Caf, police said. A 21-year-old woman who had been shot in the foot was found on Bloor Street.

A man who answered the phone at the By-the-Way Caf on Friday morning would not comment on the shooting.

The section of Bloor Street where the shooting occurred is in Toronto's vibrant Annex neighbourhood, which is full of bookstores, bars and sidewalk cafes. The corner where the shooting took place hosts the By-the-Way Caf, as well as the Future Bakery and the Brunswick House, a bustling pub popular among students.

Police quickly cordoned off a section of the thoroughfare while investigating the scene.

Police do not have a motive for the shootings but say they have numerous witnesses who believe they saw the suspects. People at the scene told police the gunman was part of a group that fled north on Brunswick Avenue.
