A York Regional Police officer has been charged in connection with a fatal pedestrian death in February, the Special Investigations Unit said.

Natasha Abogado, 18, was coming home from work on Feb. 12 and had just stepped off a TTC bus at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue East and Warden Road when she was killed.

She was struck by an unmarked York Regional Police vehicle travelling eastbound and declared dead at the scene, shortly after 8 p.m.

In a statement on Thursday, the SIU said the driver, Const. Remo Romano, has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

The York Regional Police chief offered his condolences to the Abogado family in a statement Thursday afternoon.

"This is a terrible tragedy that has had a devastating effect on all those involved," Chief Eric Jolliffe wrote. “I extend our deepest condolences to the Abogado family on their loss."

Romano is scheduled appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 24.
