Police swarmed over a neighbourhood near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue Monday night after a woman was believed to have been shot dead in a pickup truck while a young child was in the vehicle.

An officer could be seen carrying the child, believed to be about three years old, as the woman's body lay on the ground covered by an orange tarp.

The shooting took place near an apartment building's underground parking at 2130 Weston Rd. shortly before 9 p.m. Investigators believe the woman was shot in the head while in the vehicle. She left the vehicle, staggered to its rear and then collapsed.

She is believed to be between 30 and 40 years of age.

A passerby came upon the scene and called police.

When police arrived, they discovered the toddler in the vehicle's back seat. She wasn't injured. They are trying to locate the child's relatives.

A man was seen running from the area. He got into a purple vehicle with a loud muffler. That vehicle was last seen heading southeast on Weston.

CTV Toronto's Michelle Dube, reporting from the scene, said Emergency Task Force officers could be seen running in and out of one building in the area.

Police set up a command post and were expected to be on scene well into the night. Investigators are now examining footage from nearby security cameras.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-3100.

One local resident said that the neighbourhood was becoming really bad, and that gunfire could often be heard.
