A 20-year-old woman is dead after she tripped and fell over railroad tracks while trying to beat an oncoming train.

Her friend and younger sister, who managed to safely cross the tracks to the other side, could only look on as the girl was fatally struck.

Police say the incident happened at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after the three women bypassed a lowered railway crossing arm located on Denison Road, near Jane Street and Weston Road.

The women believed they could cross the tracks before the train passed through. Police said there are two sets of tracks at the location and that the women safely crossed the first set but the victim stumbled while she crossed the second set of tracks.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim at the request of her family.
