A Mississauga woman is in serious condition with burns and a stab wound following a domestic dispute Sunday.

The 52-year-old woman is being treated at a Toronto hospital trauma unit after she was stabbed with a household item and set on fire.

A 55-year-old man, who is also being treated for burns, is to be charged with attempted murder once he is released from hospital. He may face additional charges, Peel Regional Police said.

A neighbour called police around 11 p.m. Sunday to report smoke from a home near Dundas Street East and Ninth Line.

The Ontario fire marshall has been called in to determine the source of the fire. Police anticipate the findings will confirm how the woman was burned.

The name of the suspect, whom police describe as the victim's husband, will not be released to protect the identity of the victim, police said.
