An elderly woman is dead after a two-alarm fire broke out in North York Saturday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire broke out on the second floor of an apartment building on Yonge Street near Finch Avenue shortly after 1 p.m.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy smoke billowing from the window of a second-floor apartment. The blaze was considered under control a short time later.

When firefighters entered the apartment, they found the elderly woman dead in the bedroom

“It was a very hot fire,” District Fire Chief Karl Betlam told CP24 at the scene. “(Firefighters) knocked it down quickly, kept damage to rest of the building to a minimum and they got the smoke out of the building quickly. It’s just unfortunate there was a death.”

The woman has not been identified.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
