A 37-year-old woman has died following a "freak accident" in a Newmarket hospital's parking lot Friday afternoon.

The woman was leaning out her minivan's door to scan her ticket at South Lake Regional Health Centre when her vehicle jumped forward.

She was pinned between the van's door and frame and suffered severe brain injuries, Sgt. Don Dalglesh of York Regional Police said.

"It's an absolute freak accident," he told The Canadian Press.

Investigators aren't sure if the woman hit the accelerator or may have let her foot off the brake. Insp. Shelley Rogers of the York police told ctvtoronto.ca that the woman was the lone occupant of her vehicle. Rogers said there was help on the scene very quickly.

However, no one witnessed the accident.

The woman died early Christmas morning and police will not release her identity at the family's request.
