A 21-year-old woman accused of killing her father and another man in a horrific car crash over the weekend was released on bail Monday after a court appearance in Toronto.

Niki Chan, a resident of Flushing, NY, was also ordered to hand over her driver's licence to the Ontario Provincial Police as part of her bail condition. She was also ordered to report to the OPP every two weeks by phone from her hometown.

Chan has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death after a serious accident on Highway 401 Sunday afternoon.

She was travelling with her parents and her sister when the car she was driving allegedly slammed into a disabled car on the shoulder of Highway 401 at Warden Avenue.

The 71-year-old driver of the disabled Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. Chan's father, who was sitting in the backseat of the Lexus she was driving, received critical injuries and later died in hospital.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Authorities are investigating why the Lexus drove onto the shoulder. Witnesses told investigators they saw the Lexus cross three lanes before striking the Subaru.

An official with the American consulate was at the courthouse for the bail hearing. He has met with the family to advise them of the laws in Canada.

The mother and sister of the accused sat in the courtroom crying as Chan stood before the judge.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for January 14.
