Police have named the victim of a freak accident on the Queen Elizabeth Way that cost a 54-year-old man his life.

Richard Stewart of Simcoe was pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday.

He had been driving eastbound on the QEW in his Oldsmobile Alero when a piece of scrap metal blasted through his windshield, striking him.

"At this time it is uncertain where the piece of metal came from and the OPP are asking anyone with information to contract them at the Toronto Detachment," the Ontario Provincial Police said Wednesday in a news release.

The OPP said its traffic support unit and divisional crime unit are investigating this case.

"Witnesses are again asked to contact Provincial Constable K. Allen at the Toronto OPP Detachment at (416) 985-4981," it said.
