A Vaughan firefighter is facing a careless driving charge following a fatal collision between a fire truck and car earlier this month.

The accident occurred on Feb. 2 at about 10:35 a.m. A Vaughan Fires and Rescue Services pumper truck being driven by a 30-year-old firefighter was heading eastbound on Major Mackenzie Drive in response to a call.

It struck a Toyota Corolla being driven by a 54-year-old man as he was turning left off the exit ramp from the northbound lanes of Highway 400.

"The impact caused the Toyota to spin and then strike a light standard," York Regional Police said Thursday in a news release.

Firefighters immediately tried to rescue the driver, but doctors later pronounced the man dead in hospital.

Four firefighters in the pumper truck suffered minor injuries.

Gianmarco Solimena, 30, of Vaughan has been charged with one count of careless driving -- a Highway Traffic Act offence.

He is to appear before the Provincial Offences Justice Court in Newmarket on March 29.
