An 85-year-old cyclist is in serious condition after he was hit by an unmarked OPP cruiser in Orillia Tuesday afternoon.
The collision happened at 4:42 p.m. when the officer, who was travelling west-bound, hit the cyclist, who was on the same road, police said.
The cyclist was taken to Soldier's Memorial Hospital by ambulance. He was then air-lifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
The 46-year-old officer driving the OPP cruiser was also taken to Soldier's Memorial Hospital. He was treated and released.
At the scene, police closed off a portion of Atherley Road where a black bike lay on its side. A backpack was strewn near the cruiser's front tire and a smashed grey and black helmet lay on the ground.
Jennifer Clayton, a citizen who walked past shortly after the collision occurred, said she saw a fire truck, an ambulance and a man on the ground.
"There were a bunch of firefighters standing around him, trying to give him CPR, or trying to get him back," Clayton said.
She said the CPR attempts lasted for about 10 minutes.
The province's Special Investigations Unit is looking into the matter.
