Traffic returned to normal at an east-end intersection after a collision between two streetcars slowed motorists at Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue for almost three hours.

The Toronto Transit Commission said the intersection was cleared shortly before 3:30 p.m. and full service to the busy 501 Queen Street route had been restored.

The TTC had diverted the streetcar route at the intersection as police investigated the crash that occurred around noon.

Smoke filled the air as the two TTC vehicles smashed into one another. Both streetcars derailed at one point, according to the Toronto Transit Commission.

The circumstances leading up to the collision are not yet known.

Witness Sasha Clark was sitting on one of the streetcars at the time of the crash.

"Everybody was freaking out…it was total chaos," she told CP24.

Two people appeared to have suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision, said Emergency Medical Services.
