Toronto transit riders can now purchase day and group passes with their smartphones.

The Toronto Transit Commission announced the new app in a statement on Wednesday, saying that the app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Customers can download the "TTCconnect" app for free. They will then be asked to create an account, complete with a login, email address, password and billing information. Riders can then make in-app purchases of day passes that can be used at any time. Day passes are valid for one adult.

Riders can also purchase group passes when can be used on weekends and holidays. During the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, group passes can also be used on weekdays. Group passes can be used by:

  • One adult and five or fewer teenagers
  • Two adults and four or fewer teens
  • Two adults

Children aged 12 and under ride the TTC for free. Both day and group passes cost $11.50.

Once purchased, customers must activate the pass on the day of their choosing. When a pass has been activated, the background colour will change. The pass is then valid from that date until 5:30 a.m. the next day.

Riders will be asked to show their e-tickets to TTC operators as they board a bus or streetcar, or pass through a subway turnstile.

The TTC published a webpage of frequently asked questions, and a short YouTube video explaining how the e-tickets work.
