Two dump truck drivers are facing criminal charges after an elderly couple was killed in an accident on Highway 400.

On Saturday, at about 2 p.m., a dump truck travelling south lost control and slammed into the centre median near King Road.

The impact ripped the tailgate from the large truck, sending it into the northbound lanes, where it crashed through the windshield of a Chevrolet Avalanche, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Dave Woodford.

The occupants of the Chevrolet, a man and woman both aged 75, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe two dump trucks were involved in the events which lead to the deadly incident.

One driver has been charged with two counts each of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

A second driver is facing a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Both drivers will appear in a Newmarket, Ont. court Monday for a bail hearing. The names of the accused have not been released.
