Trial proceedings began Monday for one of two teens charged in the murder of their classmate.

A 17-year-old girl, who can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in a University Avenue courthouse, as the parents of murder victim Stefanie Rengel looked on.

Rengel, who was 14 at the time she was murdered, was stabbed on Jan. 1, 2008 near her East York home. She was found outside on a snow-covered sidewalk.

Shortly after the murder, police arrested two teens, a boy and a girl.

The female suspect was formally arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder.

She was wearing a white sweater with the word "Love" embroidered on the back.

Preliminary arguments will continue for two weeks and then the court will pick a jury to preside over the case.

If everything continues on schedule, the jury will hear opening arguments by the end of the month.
