One is dead following a deadly crash on Highway 401 near Port Hope about 95 kilometres east of Toronto.

The car entered the westbound lanes and skidded out of control. An oncoming truck struck the car. The car's driver died at the scene. Two others in the vehicle, including a baby, suffered injuries.

Police in the GTA have had to deal with a spate of accidents Wednesday afternoon, one of which has left  two people with life-threatening injuries.

The worst accident occurred near Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue, Sgt. Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police Service's traffic division told ctvtoronto.ca.

"We're still trying to determine exactly what happened," he said.

The reconstruction experts were just starting to piece things together by 4 p.m., "but for a bunch of seasoned traffic investigators, everyone's just scratching their heads by the way the vehicles finished up and the damage that had happened," Burrows said.

Three vehicles -- two vans and a car -- were involved in the collision, which happened about 1 p.m. Five people were injured in total.

Emergency crews had to extricate one man from the wreckage. An air ambulance transported that individual to Sunnybrook hospital.  A woman was also taken to Sunnybrook in the air ambulance. Three others were taken by land ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.

Toronto did get about 10 centimetres of snow overnight, something that led to 230 accidents. But Burrows said the roads were fine by the time this accident occurred, with the snow stopped and the skies sunny.

In other incidents, a female police officer received very minor injuries in a collision at Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue, a few blocks north of the McNicoll crash scene.

Another collision in the southern reaches of Scarborough's 41 Division saw a very young child in the back seat of a car end up in the front seat.

"There was a one-year-old and a two-year-old in the back of a car. They were both in child seats, but I guess one wasn't properly fastened in," Burrows said.

In York Region, a traffic accident at Ninth Line and 14th saw a four-year-old boy sent to hospital after he was flung from a vehicle during a collision. The boy was first taken to a local hospital, but then airlifted to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children after his condition worsened. A second child was also reportedly hurt in the incident.

York police have shut down Ninth Line from north of Highway 40 to south of Rouge Bank Drive in Markham during the course of their investigation.

The OPP had to contend with a serious accident at Highway 403 and Cawthra Road. A minivan skidded off the road. One man required airlifting to hospital, with three others also requiring medical treatment.
