Man charged in alleged fraudulent scam targeting members of Chinese community in Toronto

A man is facing more than a dozen charges in connection with an alleged fraudulent scam that targeted members of the Chinese community in Toronto.

Police said the man would approach younger Chinese residents in North York asking for gas money so he could drive to university or pick up his family.

The man would allegedly ask for an e-transfer and tell them that he would pay them back.

Police said the man would even let the victims take photos of his ID to gain their trust.

After receiving the funds, he allegedly would stop communicating with the victims.

As a result of the investigation, the man, identified as 48-year-old Wing Fung Wilfred Leung, was arrested on Wednesday. Police charged him with nine counts of fraud under $5,000 and nine counts of possession of property obtained by crime under.

“Investigators are concerned there may be more victims in the North York area,” said police, who also released a photo of Leung on Thursday.
