A two-year-old girl has died in hospital after a possible drowning at a North York apartment building on Thursday.
Police were called around noon to an apartment on Sheppard Avenue West near Bathurst Street where they found the toddler unconscious in the bathtub.
She was rushed to North York General Hospital without vital signs, and later pronounced dead.
Police say the toddler was in the care of her adult babysitter, who lives in the building. Her parents were at work at the time. They do not live in the building.
The babysitter, who has been caring for the girl for about a year, was not looking after any other children at the time, police said.
“It appears at this time it was an accidental drowning but it’s still the preliminary stages of the investigation,” Det. Andrew Taylor said.
Police have notified homicide detectives as is protocol whenever a child under the age of five dies.
Taylor said the tragedy is another reminder of how quickly a child can drown.
“Any time that children are around water, just keep a close eye on them,” he said.
