Five disaster response workers from Toronto arrived in earthquake-ravaged Haiti Friday and are setting up camp at a university where 30,000 homeless people are gathering.

The team from GlobalMedic set up their mobile hospital at one of the university campuses in Port-au-Prince.

They are distributing water purification tablets and water purifiers that can clean enough water for 1,000 people per day.

GlobalMedic in Toronto has not established communication with team leader Rahul Singh, but he sent a short text message Friday with the information.

He said an estimated 30,000 people left homeless by Tuesday's earthquake are staying on the campus.

The Toronto team crossed into Haiti from the Dominican Republic Friday.

The organization consists of paramedics, police officers, firefighters and engineers who fly in to help people in disaster zones. Five volunteers were deployed from Toronto on Thursday.

Before the group left, they told CTV Toronto that they planned to be in Haiti for 14 days.

The Toronto team plans to train Haitian teams to use the equipment from Canada.
