An east-end Toronto shopper found a needle pierced into a head of lettuce on Thursday, leading police to warn consumers that there could be more.

The five-centimetre sewing needle was pierced through a package containing two jumbo Andy Boy brand romaine hearts. It was lodged into the spine of one of the heads of lettuce, according to a news release issued Sunday.

Toronto police said it was purchased at the No Frills grocery store at the Golden Mile Plaza at 1880 Eglinton Ave. East.

Staff Sgt. Gary Tutchener told ctvtoronto.ca that after an initial investigation into two east-end grocery stores, police determined the package was purchased at the No Frills because it was the only store to carry the brand of lettuce.

Tutchener said the lettuce was delivered to the store a week ago, so the remaining packages would have already been purchased.

No one was injured and police are advising the public to examine all pre-packaged lettuce thoroughly before eating it, if they believe they purchased a similar product last week.

The package containing the tainted lettuce was made of clear plastic with pink lettering.
