Two Toronto sailors were rescued from Lake Ontario after their catamaran capsized and left them stranded for several hours Wednesday night.

The sailors had disappeared after leaving their sailing club at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. A rescue operation was launched when they did not check in at 9 p.m.

Four boats and a plane searched for the men for several hours before spotting them hanging from their drifting sailboat south of the Leslie Street Spit.

The men, an instructor and a student from the Westwood Sailing Club, were recovered shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, after high waves capsized their 18-foot catamaran.

Rescued sailor Gord Sperry said the wind was a lot higher than expected during the trip.

"We got out past Centre Island, on the other side of the island, and got hit with a gust. It pushed our catamaran over," he told reporters after the rescue.

Sperry said he and his sailing instructor were stuck underneath the catamaran for about a minute, but were able to surface and wait for help.
