The suspect in the "Mummy Bandit" case has been identified by police and is facing 36 charges relating to 16 robberies.

Brandon Michael Smith, 26, was arrested in Toronto on Thursday afternoon, as a result of tips generated by the public, police said in a statement issued Friday.

Police allege that 16 downtown-area banks were robbed between Aug. 2, 2012 and June 20, 2014 by the same man.

Early robberies were performed by passing a note to the teller, demanding money. Over time, police said the robberies escalated to violence, involving assaults with knives and firearms.

As the robber's behaviour changed, so did his disguise and nickname. Before becoming the "Mummy Bandit," the robber was also called the "Joker Bandit" and the "Thriller Bandit."

The most recent nickname came from a scarf that looked like a bandage worn around the man's face. He was first called the "Thriller Bandit" because witnesses said he had a nose like Michael Jackson's, then he started wearing makeup to disguise his looks, and became the "Joker Bandit."

Smith has been charged with 10 counts of robbery with a firearm, six counts of robbery, nine counts of disguise with intent, nine counts of possession of dangerous weapons and two counts of assault with a weapon.

He will appear at Old City Hall court by video on July 11 at 2 p.m.
