A 40-year-old Toronto man has been charged after a plainclothes officer was struck by a car outside an Etobicoke hotel early Thursday morning.

Police said two plainclothes officers were investigating a silver Acura sedan parked behind the Deluxe Motel on the Queensway, west of Kipling Avenue, shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Police allege the driver of the sedan suddenly sped up as the officer and his partner approached the car, striking the officer in the process. The injured officer was thrown onto the hood and held on for several metres before falling off.

Police say the officer suffered a sprained ankle as well as various scrapes and bruises.

Fitzroy Allen has been charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous operation causing bodily harm and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

He is set to appear in court Friday, Aug. 12, 2011.
