It's been the rainiest summer in more than 25 years, according to Environment Canada.

Toronto broke a record previously set in 1980 at about 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. A heavy storm brought the season's rainfall accumulation to 272.8 millimetres.

Toronto was under a severe thunderstorm warning for most of the afternoon but the threat passed by Wednesday evening.

Rain fell for most of the morning and early afternoon throughout the entire Greater Toronto Area. Roads were washed out, trees crashed to the ground and basements were flooded.

Environment Canada predicted about 55 mm of rain would fall. Rain is in the forecast for the rest of the week through Sunday.

On Tuesday night, heavy rain pummeled North York and Thornhill, flooding local roads and toppling trees.

A police officer monitoring local roads told CTV Toronto the storm felt like a monsoon.

"The rain wasn't actually coming down, it was coming side to side," he said.
