A man has been rushed to hospital with severe burns after a late-night fire at a residential building in the Wilson and Bathurst area.

Firefighters worked to contain a blaze on the first floor of an apartment building located at 12 King High Avenue on Friday night.

A male victim, identified by neighbours as Dwight Welch, was found unresponsive on the scene and suffered major burns on his body. He has been transported to Sunnybrook Hospital in serious condition.

Another person is being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Residents of the building were evacuated and transported onto TTC busses as crews worked to battle the blaze.

The building, known as King High Acres, is listed as a Toronto Community Housing Building.

Officials say they were able to contain the fire quickly and that residents will be able to return to their homes as soon as the scene it cleared.
